Wired on Air Force Cyber Command

Kudos to Marty Graham of Wired for writing Welcome to Cyberwar Country, USA. This is original reporting on the Air Force Cyber Command, focusing on the question of where to formally house the command. I personally hope it is located near Washington, DC. Given that the JTF-GNO and NSA are nearby, it would make sense for the Air Force to be physically close to coordinate work and draw on local talent.

As I live and work near Langley Air Force Base in Newport News, VA, I really hope we get to house the Cyber command. It'd be a big boost for the local infosec community, not to mention IT in the broader sense.

Oh yeah, I'm not biased. Nope. 8-)

Ahh, I am pretty sure that it will be down south...say Louisiana or in the Midwest somewhere. D.C. would just make too much sense.

Wikipedia says:

"Construction of a Cyber Innovation Center (CIC), which would serve as the civilian counterpart to the AFCYBER, is scheduled to begin in October, 2007. The CIC will be built on a 58-acre site, near Barksdale Air Force Base. Bossier City, LA has allotted $50 million USD for the construction, while the state of Louisiana has approved another $50 million."

Louisiana. No doubts.

Seeing how I live and have consulted on the program for Louisiana, I will have to vote for Louisiana.

As I have said before - the boys with the 50" zippers need love too.

From the AF this morning:

2/13/2008 - BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- The decision for the final location of the Air Force Cyber Command was expected to be finalized before the official Oct. 1 stand up of the command, but senior leaders now say it will not be made until closer to the end of the year.

I know I don't want to make the three hour drive from Dallas again...

"Hi, US Air, I'd like a ticket to Shreveport. Yeah, Shreveport. S h r e v e p o r t ... yeah ... What do you mean I can't get there from here??"

Lackland AFB, (San Antonio), IMHO is possibly the best decision for location. What with AF ISR Agency, NSA Texas, 67th NWW, (the workhorse of Cyber Command), etc, etc, etc. Not to mention the sheer communications infrastructure of San Antonio and it's resident IT intellectual holdings, (Southwest Research Institute, UTSA, AT&T, etc, etc, etc). As for land/space; Lackland easily has space/current facilities. (Medina Annex, "old" Kelly AFB, "Security Hill", etc, etc, etc.) No Question, AFCYBER should go to San Antonio. AND, there are direct flights to and from San Antonio from the beltway (D.C.), USSTRATCOM (Omaha), and ACC (Langley AFB). Barksdale/Shreveport cannot claim the same.
